The College Sailing Nation shifts its focus; The Northwest qualifies for Team Race Nationals
April 17, 2018

College sailing lost a legend last week. Harold (Hatch) Brown passed away last Wednesday and our sailing community is a little less whole. Brown was the Sailing Master and Head Coach at MIT for almost three decades. His contributions to our game live on and his impact can be felt through the spirit of College Sailing today. Brown was 86.

#8 Harvard University won the Thompson Trophy hosted by Connecticut College. The three division, 36 race event was one of two premier coed fleet race regattas last weekend as the ICSA largely switches gears for an abbreviated fleet race focused season. Harvard stepped up and won decisively amid trying conditions. Their 69 point margin of victory was a team effort, but the Crimson’s C-Division boat, Eli Burns ‘21 and Kevin Coakley ‘18 managed, still, to stand out. The tandem put together a scoreline with 11 of 12 races in the top-3, totalling 32 points, 40 points ahead of second place.

Conference Championships Send Teams to Nationals

#1 Yale University won the Fowle Trophy, New England’s Team Race Championship, hosted by Connecticut College. The Bulldogs have been slow to start regattas this spring season. At the Fowle, however, they flipped the script on that narrative and, in doing so, proved that they are the best in NEISA in a variety of sailing conditions. Posting a 10-1 record in the round of 12 and a 5-2 record in the round of 8, Yale was the outright winner in a extremely deep field.

#5 Brown wins the Dellenbaugh; #7 Boston College wins the Marchiando
April 03, 2018

#5 Brown University won the Dellenbaugh Women’s Trophy decisively in sporty conditions. Leaving nothing to chance, the home team captured the regatta lead after race 4 in A-Division and never looked back. The Brown Bears won by 54 points after 34 total races and left much of the event, arguably the deepest women’s interconference seen yet this spring, a race for second place.

Friis Trophy, Mid Atlantic Champs and Women’s Team Racing News
March 27, 2018

#5 Yale University won the Friis Team Race, held at Roger Williams University. Last weekend’s premier team race event in New England featured the NEISA elite. Despite the depth of talent, two teams were able to pull in front late in the regatta. Both Yale and #1 Roger Williams University separated themselves from the field but drama was not lost as rights to the regatta crown came down to the final race. Yale, for the second straight week, went undefeated in the top-6, final round robin and this time, the elite sailing late stole the regatta from the home team. Yale finished with 12 wins and 2 losses, while Roger Williams finished with 11 wins and 3 losses.

It was another warm sunny day for the sailors at Belmont Veterans Memorial Pier at the U.S. Sailing Center in Long Beach, CA with temperatures in the high 70s. The close racing continued and challenged sailors as the day began with the Southern California Santa Ana winds fighting the sea breeze. This resulted in some shocking puffs and fleet inversions where one part of the fleet was sailing upwind while the other part was sailing downwind. The race committee had to abandon several races due to the conditions and eventually posted a postponement until the sea breeze filled in and the wind direction settled so racing could resume.

The first day of the Intercollegiate Sailing Association’s (ICSA) Coed Semifinals, where the 36 top college sailing teams in the country gathered to compete in order to vie for spots to the ICSA/Gill Coed National Championships May 30 – June 1 at the Gorge in Cascade Locks, Oregon, began with close to an hour delay this morning due to dueling winds. Once the breeze filled in from the southerly direction it provided an excellent sea breeze that ranged from 5 knots to 12 knots throughout the day with gusts to 16 knots. Six races were completed for both events in both A and B divisions. With sunny skies and warm temperatures, it was an excellent day for racing.
